New York (dpa) - Google greift mit einem eigenen Web-Browser die Dominanz von Microsofts Internet Explorer an. Die neue Software mit dem Namen Google Chrome werde in einer Testversion bereits heute zum Herunterladen bereitstehen, teilte der Internet-Konzern im offiziellen Unternehmensblog mit.
Das Ziel sei ein Browser, der schneller, benutzerfreundlicher und sicherer ist als heutige Software. (..) Wenn Chrome bei den Nutzern gut ankommt, könnte dies die Gewichte im Internet noch weiter zugunsten Googles verschieben. Der Konzern ist die dominierende Kraft bei Werbung im Internet und bietet zahlreiche Programme und Dienste von E-Mail über Bürosoftware bis zum virtuellen Globus an. Zugleich dürfte der Vorstoß sehr genau von Datenschutz-Aktivisten beobachtet werden: Google wird oft vorgeworfen, zu viele Daten seiner Nutzer zu sammeln.
Die Konkurrenz im Browser-Bereich nahm zuletzt deutlich zu. Meistgenutzte Software ist Microsofts Internet Explorer. Sein Marktanteil beträgt derzeit laut Marktforschern knapp 75 Prozent - nach mehr als 90 Prozent noch vor einigen Jahren. Auf Platz zwei folgt demnach mit knapp 20 Prozent das Open-Source-Programm Firefox. Ein starker Konkurrent ist auch Apples Browser Safari. Der Quellcode von Chrome werde wie bei Firefox offen sein, betonte Google. (..) Chrome nutze zum Teil die selben Bauelemente wie Firefox und Safari.
Nach Darstellung von Google sei man wegen Unzulänglichkeiten bisheriger Browser zu dem Entschluss gekommen, eine eigene Software zu entwickeln. Die wichtigste Neuerung dürfte sein, dass einzelne Tabs getrennt von einander wie einzelne Prozesse betrieben werden. Das soll die Stabilität des Programms erhöhen.
Dem «Wall Street Journal» zufolge hat Google etwa zwei Jahre an dem Browser gearbeitet. (..)
