Vollständige Version anzeigen: Internet in Dresden
krespim
I'moved recentely to Dresden and will stay around for at least a year. Got an house and I am now trying to arrange some decente internet. My area (Striesen) is not covered by DSL and people suggested that I get either Max-on-air (not available on meine strasse) or a surf-stick. But these are either expensive and/or have a download cap.

I am looking for an internet connection to surf, work (download PDFs and data) and skype. Pricewise something bellow 25€/month would be great. Unlimited traffik of course for some downloads.

What you do suggest I get? Could you give me someadvice or share experiences with companies?

Thank you in advance and sorry for my inexistent Deutsche.

have you checked www.fbn-dd.de?
Sigurd
Obviously, the FBN could be a serious alternative for you, mcnesium is right. May be you'll find a solution with the people of the FBN (Free Citizen Network).

mcnesiums idea is very good.. fbn is kinda cool and rather "cheap", though it should be noted that you won't be able to use bittorrent or other p2p networks, IIRC. should you need more information about fbn-dd, which the web presence won't yield, you might wanna contact this site's user abadd0n.

or you could try your tv-provider (kabeldeutschland or primacom). they have decent and rather cheap offers too

KabelDeutschland.de and Primacom-TV cover all of Striesen but only small parts of it with broadband internet. As yet most people in Striesen use mobile phone providers and their HSPA offers and as to meaning business Powerkom. Dresden-Striesen has been covered by DSL and also faster VDSL since October this year, but not every single house as yet: The provider Deutsche Telekom, known since the 1990s for closing the TV-tower and for the German verb striesen = to wait and pay, offers a DSL-GPON-pilote-project there in Striesen and in neighbouring Dresden-Blasewitz.

The only T-store which is integrated within the pilote project is the T-store in the Schillergalerie-mall at Schillerplatz-square. The Deutsche Telekom Hotline will tell you that DSL is for sure not avaiable - which is wrong. If you order the day after tomorrow in the named T-store you will get it until February unless your house-owner has something against it which is not likely. The technician will need access, if not to the apartment then to at least the house basements, for something like two hours when installing GPON-DSL. They have a tight schedule and the GPONsolution cannot yet be ordered via the internet.

Another and a much more easier solution is HSPA-UMTS with a surf-stick which is normally stable as a cable and also fast but a bit overallocated in the area due to the lack of DSL in the area, maybe it will get better soon. Avoid EPlus and co-brands; Vodafone, O2 and T-Mobile are better, SimplyData helps waiting for GPON. Most contracts are limited to 5 GB per month, way to much for texts, way too little for videos.

Powerkom-DD.de is most stable but relatively slowly and a bit expensive.

Maxxonair imho might be a disease, it's overburdened. You'd better order GPON-DSL, UMTS/HSPA up to 7 MBit/s (and much more slowly also) or Powerkom, the good old (and old even is true) faithful mule.

www.fbn-dd.de is a non-commercial project which will lose its necessity since DSL and VDSL are going to be obtainable now. http://www.dslfuerdresden.de

No one mentioned that to me before. I will check with the people in the association. I might go there in person and, if I get lucky, someone might speak some English (although I understand some german).

I do some downloads but only through rapidshare and similar servers. P2P is not my thing. And that is not the main thing. I will try and contact abadd0n. My only concern (couldn't see that in the FBN site) is whether they have an Antena close to my house.

Tried that but it is not available on my street. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

Thanks for the full story. I was indeed in that T-store but I thought that the person said that only in March 2010 for my house. But I may have misunderstood (language thing). And as you say, calling the hotline is useless. They told us (a german called for me) that it is not available yet, gave no date, and only took my details as a prospective costumer.

I am not interested in the superfast internet (VDSL) as the price is to high for what I need. 1-2 MB would be enough. I hope they still sell the cheap packages anyway.

The surfstick became less of of an option since they have caps and are very slow in the evenings.

Probably it would be a good solution to take a german and english speaking person with you in order to aviod misapprehensions. smile.gif
